Leaders have learned to put on masks in order to gain respect and authority. This outdated way of leadership causes others around them, individuals and teams, to put on their own masks.

I learned everything about leadership by being a drug addict. One of the most important things I learned in my recovery is the 3 principles.

  • Practice Rigorous Authenticity
  • Surrender The Outcome
  • Do Uncomfortable Work

The 3 principles helped me advance in my career and build successful businesses, but it also helped me realize that authenticity and vulnerability is a great tool for leadership. I even wrote a book about it.

After completing a merger worth $25.1 Billion, we selected Michael to be the keynote speaker for our first IT Division Leadership Summit of the new combined company. We wanted a dynamic speaker and we received just that with Michael! His story and delivery is so powerful. He gave our team a language to talk about topics we don't typically discuss that are holding us back from being more successful as a team and organization. I highly recommend Michael and have no doubt our team will use and talk about mask-free leadership long after this summit!

Guido Sacchi

We laughed, we cried, but most importantly, Michael's workshop helped our team of senior leaders be fully vulnerable about our strengths, weaknesses, goals and fears. We feel closer and more equipped to share our struggles. There was clear takeaway on how to apply the workshop learnings back in our day to day work groups as well as personal lives. We appreciate that Michael customized our workshop and familiarized with the team members and group dynamics ahead of time.

One day, during my time as a CEO, I got tough on one of my employees who reported to one of my leaders.

As soon as he left the room, I looked at one of my leaders and asked “Was I too tough on him?”

Most employees will agree with their leaders in fear of losing their job.

Luckily, I’ve created an environment where my team felt safe to tell me the truth, even if that meant I was wrong. He replied “You were too tough. That was NOT okay.” I asked him why and he did. It actually ended up unveiling something that I needed to work on.

I went and brought that employee back into the room with my leaders. With tears in my eyes, I apologized to him and I explained to him what was going through my head that caused me to say what I said, and that it had nothing to do with what he did.

A couple of days later, one of my leaders wrote me a card and it read:

“Every CEO makes that same mistake… but I don’t know any CEO that would do what you did next.”

This kind of vulnerability and authenticity is extremely rare in the leadership space, but it ended up helping me gain so much trust, love and respect not only from my leaders, but also from the employee. All because I was being vulnerable. I got an opportunity to grow because they didn’t just agree with me.
